Active materials embedded in photonic crystals and coupled to electromagnetic radiation

چکیده
A calculational scheme is presented to model the interaction of light with active dielectric media, represented by four-level atomic materials, surrounded by photonic crystals. Optically pumped lasing is studied in three model systems: a Fabry-Perot cavity, a line of defects in a two-dimensional square lattice of rods, and a cylindrical photonic crystal. Field profiles and conversion efficiencies are calculated for these systems. It is shown that high conversion efficiency can be achieved for large regions of active material in the cavity, as well as for a single fluorescent atom in a hollow-core cylindrical photonic crystal, suggesting designs for ultralowthreshold lasers and ultrasensitive biological sensors.

Influence of optical Kerr coefficient on photonic band structures of hexagonal-lattice function photonic crystals
In this paper, we have studied the photonic band structure of function photonic crystals in which the dielectric constant of the scattering centers (rods) is a function of space coordinates. The under-studied lattice is hexagonal and cross section of rods has a circular symmetry embedded in the air background. Photonic band structures for both electric and magnetic polarizations of the electrom...

In this article, we investigate how the photonic band gaps and the variety of band dispersions of photonic crystals can be utilized for various applications and how they further give rise to completely novel optical phenomena. The enhancement of spontaneous emission through coupled cavity waveguides in a one-dimensional silicon nitride photonic microcrystal is investigated. We then present the ...

The main properties of photonic crystals stem from the existence of frequency ranges for which the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the medium is not permitted. These frequency ranges are commonly known as photonic band gaps and give the ability to modify the structure parameters, e.g., group velocity, coherence length, gain, and spontaneous emission. Photonic crystals’ properties are be...

The radiation dynamics of a dipole antenna embedded in a photonic crystal are modeled by an initially excited harmonic oscillator coupled to a non-Markovian bath of harmonic oscillators representing the colored electromagnetic vacuum within the crystal. Realistic coupling constants based on the natural modes of the photonic crystal, i.e., Bloch waves and their associated dispersion relation, ar...

We review the research of our group on propagation of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals (PCs) and micrometer scale left-handed materials (LHMs). The main topics that we focus on regarding PCs are the modification of the spontaneous emission rate of sources embedded into them, their ability to produce beams with high directionality and their negative refraction and focusing properties, ...
